Local cooperatives in the Sungai Siring area, Samarinda, East Kalimantan, has waged a ?war? against coal mining company PT Lana Harita Indonesia (LHI) for taking over land belonging to the cooperatives, the Kaltim Post daily said Saturday.
The paper said that LHI has deployed PT Buma to exploit the 60 hectare parcel of land which was believed to contain huge coal reserves.
The paper said that LHI had obtained the necessary license to mine the disputed area, but the cooperatives also claimed that it had already obtained a license earlier than LHI to manage the land although at first they did not realize the coal potential in the area.
Kaltim Post said that the protesting cooperatives planned to blockade the operation of PT Buma today (Saturday).(*)
