A member of South Kalimantan's council questioned the importance of the government's plan of building a mining high school in Batulicin, Kotabaru regency.

Head of the Council's Commission E Nur Izzatul Khasarah, in a hearing with the province's education and culture office, based on her observation, the Batulicin people preferred a fishery high school to mining high school, given the fact that the area is surrounded by seawaters.

Head of the province's education and culture office Kasim Abdurrahman said his office planned to build a mining high school in Batulicin rather than a fishery high school given the area's huge mining resource. Furthermore, the neighboring area of Tanah Lot already has a fishery high school.

"If we build a similar (fishery) school in Batulicin, we shall have more fishery schools than needed," Kasim was quoted by Kapos as saying.

He said the proposal for the construction of the mining school in Batulicin had been submitted to the Ministry of Education and Culture but the ministry had yet to approve it.

According to Kasim, aside from mining, the school will also teach students on automotive. (*)
