Chevron Pacific Indonesia (CPI) is currently preparing to apply enhanced oil recovery stage 2 (SFT 2), by injecting surfactant at its aging fields to maintain oil production at its Minas oil field, Riau.
The SFT 2 is aimed at obtaining oil from tertiary resources, Harris Djauhari, Vice President for Sumatera Light Area of CPI told Petromindo.com.
CPI has conducted EOR pilot projects since 2000 (stage 1) by injecting surfactant to obtain oil from secondary resources. The project has helped the company to slow down natural declining of oil production of its maturing fields.
Following the completion of the pilot project, CPI now is moving to the next stage by applying SFT 2 program. Currently, the company is setting up mixer chemical tanks and other supporting facilities which are expected to begin operating in March 2012.
Under the SFT program, the company will inject chemical materials into aging wells beginning July 2012. The technology will stimulate oil in tertiary layers to move to reservoirs. The SFT 2 program will cover an area of 4.5 hectares and is expected to be completed in 2015.
CPI hopes the SFT 2 program will help ramp up its oil production by 36 thousand barrels of oil (MBO), said Harris Djauhari, VP for Sumatera Light Area of CPI.
The company plans to widen the EOR program to Area A covering 18 hectares of land in 2015-2016, which is expected to help ramp up production by a potential total of 940 MBO. The EOR program will be expanded to Area B in mid 2021.
The company hopes the EOR program will show peak results in 2021 with additional reserves of 1 billion barrels of oil.
Based on EOR stage I, the company found that the best chemical mix to be used for the EOR program is surfactant and polymer. The mix comprising of 98 percent water and 2 percent chemical material is injected into reservoir with measuring depth of about 700 meters (2000 feet).
