The delays in the operation of several new coal-fired power plants built under the Phase I 10,000 MW power plant development program have partly contributed to the increase in the electricity subsidy to Rp 66.33 trillion in 2011 from the initial target of Rp 40.7 trillion, a senior governmental official said

The government has targeted new coal-fired power plants will provide additional supply of 4,592 MW this year. But, the operations of the power plants have been delayed.

?As many as 2,472,027 MW per hour have to be produced using petroleum-based fuels because of the delay in the operation of coal-fired power plants.

"This has resulted in an increase in operating costs to Rp 5.02 trillion,? the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry?s Director General of Electricity, Jarman, said during a hearing with the Commission VII of the House of Representatives on Friday.

To ensure there won't be more delays in the operation of the new coal-fired power plants, the government would improve coordination among officials of state owned elecricity firm PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN), Jarman added.

The new coal-fired power plants include six located in Java and Bali that is PLTU 1 Banten or Suralaya (625 MW), PLTU 3 Banten or Lontar (945 MW), PLTU 1 Jabar or Indramayu (990 MW), PLTU 2 Jabar or Pelabuhan Ratu (350 MW), PLTU 1 Jateng or Rembang (630 MW) and PLTU 1 Jatim or Pacitan (630 MW).

Two other coal-fired power plants in western Indonesia including PLTU Kepri or Tanjung Balai Karimun (14 MW) and PLTU 3 Babel or Bangka Baru (60 MW) will also begin operation this year, providing power supply of 74 MW.

In eastern Indonesia, six coal-fired power plants are scheduled to begin operation this year providing additional supply of 384 megawatt. They include PLTU Kalsel or Asam-Asam (130 MW), PLTU 1 NTT or Ende (14 MW), PLTU 2 Sulut or Amurang (50 MW), PLTU Sultra or Kendari (20 MW), PLTU Sulsel or Barru (100 Mw), PLTU Maluku Utara or Tidore (14 MW) and PLTU 2 Papua or Jayapura (20 MW).
