The directorate general of mining will be liquidated in the run up to the full implementation of the regional autonomy policy in January next year, according to Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Purnomo Yusgiantoro.
Purnomo said that with the new regional policy, the authority in the mining sector would have to be transferred to the respective provincial and district administrations.
He said that with the liquidation of the directorate general of mining, the ministry would only have three directorate general offices including the directorate general for geology and mineral resources, the directorate general for oil and gas and the directorate general for electricity.
Purnomo admitted that some regions might not be immediately ready to take the greater responsibility in the mining sector. He said that he had talked this problem over with the director general of mining to implement the transfer of authority gradually, and to form a consultation team to assist the provincial and district administration.
