State-owned electricity company PT. Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) has recently started operating the Duri gas-fired power plant, with a combined capacity of 7x16 MW, in Pinggir District, Bengkalis Regency, Riau, strengthening electricity supply in the province.
The company said in a press statement issued late Thursday, the power plant uses compressed natural gas (CNG) as fuel, which is cheaper compared to diesel fuel, allowing the company to save about Rp 23 billion per month.
The peaking power plant, which is operated from 6 p.m.-10 p.m., supplies its electricity to the Riau sub-system, which has a peak load of 475 MW.
Going forward, PLN said it plans to replace the metering equipment so as to allow the plant to receive greater volume of gas so that it can be operated both during the day and evening.
