A Dutch company has proposed for the development of a marine current power plant in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Ignasius Jonan said on Wednesday.

He said that NTT Governor Frans Lebu Raya unveiled the proposal to him last month, under which the Dutch firm is ready to develop the project and sell the electricity to state-owned power company PLN at a competitive price of 7.18 US cents per kWh.

Jonan did not disclose the name of the Dutch company. He said that at that power tariff, PLN would be able to procure up to 20 MW of the electricity.

He said that the Dutch firm initially proposed the electricity tariff to be set at 16 cents per kWh, which he immediately rejected. But after a second study on the marine currents at the Larantuka Strait, which found average current speed of above 4 meter per second, higher than 2.8 meters per second under the first study, the Dutch firm then proposed the much lower electricity tariff.

Elsewhere, Jonan told reporters that he plans to add another 3,000 MW of renewables capacity through 2019. He is confident of reaching the target, as over the past 10 months alone, around 700 MW of renewable projects have been signed, and several others are under construction stage and some will start operation soon.
