Dutch firm to build marine power project in NTT

A Dutch company plans to develop a marine power plant in Flores Timur Regency, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) Province as part of the Indonesian government plans to build a bridge in the area.

Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs Luhut Panjaitan, who also oversees the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, was quoted by detik.com as saying last week that the government via the Ministry of Public Works and People?s Housing plans to build a 800-meter bridge called the Pancasila-Palmerah Bridge, in Flores Timur Regency, under which a marine power turbine will be developed by a Dutch firm. He did not disclose the identity of the Dutch firm.

He said that the project forms part of agreement between the Indonesian and the Dutch governments.

He said that the currents under the bridge has the potential to produce electricity of up to 300 MW. If the project is realized, he said, it would provide electricity to help meet demand of industries in the region.

Luhut said that the government is currently still in negotiation with the Dutch firm including on the price of electricity from the project. The Dutch firm has offered a price of 16 US cents per kWh, while the government wants a lower price, he added, but did not provide further details. (*)
