Balikpapan city administration in East Kalimantan and area oil producers are scheduled to jointly hold a two-day seminar on Thursday with an aim to find ways of curbing dengue in the city, Suara Karya daily reported on Thursday.

The oil companies were TotalFinaElf, Unocal and VICO Indonesia.

As many as 10 people had died since January after being affected by dengue. They were among the 556 people suffering from the epidemic this year.

?We expect the seminar to decide the formation of an institution, or turn out a comprehensive plan, for dealing with the epidemic,? said city spokesman Ali Munsyir Halim.

Last year, 476 people in Balikpapan were affected by dengue, of whom eight died.

Balikpapan has a total population of some 500,000 people. (*)
