Thursday, April 25 2002 - 02:53 AM WIB

A crude waste dumping pool owned by state oil and gas firm Pertamina in Sangatta, East Kalimantan burnt on Wednesday causing thick smoke in the area, local daily Kaltim Post reported.

The fire occurred possibly after a man accidentally threw a cigarette butt to a bush near a road not far from the dumping pool. The bush fire reached the pool and burned it.

Pertamina?s firefighters tried put off the fire at the pool, but Kaltim Post did not say whether they succeeded to keep the fire from nearby fuel storage and gas pipes owned by Pertamina. (*)
