E. Kalimantan to issue regulation on mine reclamation

The legislative council of East Kalimantan province will soon pass the proposed regulation on sanctions to be given on mining companies which do not comply with the reclamation requirements, Tempo.co reported on Monday.
Andi Harun, chairman of the special committee for the establishment of provincial regulations, said on Tuesday the endorsement of the new regulation would be made in May.
He said that the regulation would be needed because the existing mine reclamation regulation provides too light sanctions of only up to six months in jail or fine of only Rp 50 million.
Because such light sanctions, many mining companies in the province ignored the reclamation requirements causing serious problems to the environment. He hoped that the new regulation would not overlap with other rulings so that the home affairs ministry would not overturn the much needed legal instrument. (*)
