The local government of East Kalimantan has pledged to provide about Rp 2 trillion (1US$ = Rp 12,025) to partly finance a 2 x 100 megawatt coal-fired power plant to be built by state electricity company PLN in Muara Jawa, East Kalimantan. Kaltim Post reported

The pledge was made by East Kalimantan governor Awang Farouk during a meeting with PLN?s president director Fahmi Mochtar in Jakarta on Thursday.

Fahmi said that the Muara Jawa power project is currently under study. The project may cost about Rp 2.58 trillion and construction is expected to start in 2011

If the plan is realized, the East Kalimantan government will be the first local administration providing funds for the country?s power projects.

In addition to this project, a number of independent power producers have planned also to build power plants in the province including PLTU Kaltim (a coal fired power plant with 2 x 100 MW capacity), PLTG Senipah (gas-fired, 2 x 40 MW), PLTG Sembera (gas-fired, 2 x 20 MW) and PLTU Kaltim Infrastructure (coal-fired, 2 x 100).
