East Java Police chief Maj. Gen. Dai Bachtiar vowed on to crackdown makers of doctored fuel products in the province.

The Kompas daily quoted Dai as saying during a hearing session on Wednesday with the local House of Representatives that fake fuel products would cause difficulties to the poor people and could create social unrest.

He appealed to the public to support the police in cracking down makers of doctored fuel products.

The police recently unveiled a syndicate manufacturing doctored diesel fuel products. Some 2,100 tons of the products were seized. The doctored fuel product was a mixture of diesel oil and kerosene.

Five officials of the state owned oil and gas company Pertamina East Java unit were arrested, but they were later released following demand from the head of the Pertamina East Java office Soemarsono. (*)
