East Java to auction geothermal working areas

East Java provincial government will auction two geothermal working areas which have combined capacity to generate 400 MW of electricity, a government official said as quoted by The Jakarta Post.

Tutut Herawati, East Java Energy and Mineral Office head said the provincial government was preparing a joint team from the central government, provincial and regency administrations to open a tender for the two geothermal projects called Ngebel in Ponorogo regency and Ijen in Banyuwangi.

The geothermal resource in the Blawan-Ijen area is located on the border of Banyuwangi and Bondowoso and has a capacity of 185 MW.

The resource in the Ngebel-Wilis area, on the border of Ponorogo and Madiun, has a capacity of 120 MW.

Tutut said the province had a further nine geothermal deposits that would be offered to investors in the future.

The nine, located in Madiun, Mojokerto, Probolinggo, Pacitan, Malang and Sumenep, have a combined potential capacity of 580 MW. (*)
