East Kalimantan oil reserves total 1.19 billion barrel

The oil reserves in East Kalimantan province reach 1.19 billion barrel including 454.12 million of onshore reserves and 741.5 million barrel of offshore reserves, Governor Suwarna AF said.

Suwarna was quoted as saying by the local Jaya Post daily that gas reserves totaled 38.33 million cubic meter including 11.23 million cubic meter onshore and 27.1 million cubic meter offshore.

Suwarna was speaking in a presentation before visiting Ambassador of the Netherlands to Indonesia.

He also said that coal reserves in the province totaled 5.4 billion tons with total coal mining area of 134 thousand hectare.

He said that gold and silver reserves was estimated to reach 53.5 million tons. He said that out of the 24 gold mining companies, 7 have started operation this year, but only one PT Kelian Equatorial Mining which have reached the exploitation stage with production of between 11-14 million tons of gold and 8-11 million tons of silver per year.

Suwarna said that several mining companies have been facing difficulties from local non-governmental organizations who perceived the mining operation to have been unfair to the local people and environment.

But he said that the movement of the NGOs have tended to be destructive lately including blockading the production process at the mining companies.

Suwarna said that among of the companies whose production process had been disrupted included PT Kelian Equatorial Mining, PT Gunung Bayan Pratama Coal, PT Kaltim Prima Coal, PT Bukit Baiduri Enterprise, and PT Kideco Jaya Agung. (*)
