The realized coal production of East Kalimantan province, the country's largest coal producer, has reached 75 percent of this year's target of 80 million tons, Bisnis Indonesia reported on Monday.
"Most of the coal produced as of this month were exported," Syamsul Bachri, the head of the province's mining office, said.
East Kalimantan, with coal reserves of about 22 billion tons, is set to produce about 80 million tons of coal this year from about 60 million tons in 2004.
With such massive coal reserves, the East Kalimantan province will not only take the advantage of its coal deposit for exports but also for power generation, he said, adding that a coal-fired power plant with a capacity of 2 x 25 megawatt is now being built to cope with the shortage of the power supply in the province.
"Similar power plants will be also built in Bontang and Berau regencies," he added. (*)
