East Kalimantan to take action soon against illegal miners

The newly-formed East Kalimantan illegal mining curbing team plans to take action soon against illegal gold and coal mining activity in four areas in the province, the local Jaya Post daily said.

The paper quoted head of the provincial office of the ministry of mineral resources and energy Istiardjo as saying that the action would be concentrated in the Samarinda mayoralty, and in Kutai, Berau and Pasir regencies.

Istiardjo said that the curbing of the illegal mining activity was made in abid to maintain investors confidence, to uphold the authority of the administration and to protect the local environment.

He said that rampant illegal coal mining activity in the province was seen in six locations including in the mining site of PT Tanito Harum, PT Lanna Harita Indonesia, PT Kaltim Prima Coal, and PT Multi Harapan Utama.

He added that illegal gold mining activity was rampant in 36 locations in the Kutai, Berau, and Pasir regencies.

"The integrated team has made coordination with the regents to implement the curbing of illegal mining," Istiardjo said.(*)
