The people of the Giri Mukti village in Pasir regency, East Kalimantan, demanded oil and gas firm Unocal Indonesia to pay compensation for damaging local agriculture land, the Kaltim Post daily said in its Sunday edition.
The paper quoted the villagers spokesman Desmon Hariman Sormin as saying that farming land of the villagers had been damaged because of the waste materials disposed by Unocal from 1976 to 1995.
The paper said that the villagers demanded Rp 2 million (US$1=Rp 10,350) in compensation per year for each hectare of land, and an additional Rp 30 million compensation.
The paper said that Unocal was also facing similar compensation demand from other group of villagers.(*)
