East Kutai urges coal mining firms to report activities

At least 29 coal mining companies have been given license to operate coal mines in East Kutai (Kutim) regency, in East Kalimantan province, but most of them have not reported their activities yet, local newspaper Kaltim Post reported on Tuesday.

The head of the mining office of the Kutim regency, Roos Darno said in Samarinda on Monday that the coal miners which routinely reported their activities were only a few includnig PT Kaltim Prima Coal (KPC), PT Indominco Mandiri, PT Kitadin Tanjung Mayang, PT Perkasa Inakakerta and PT Kobexindo.

"The others have not yet reported their activities to the Kutim government," he was quoted as saying.

Kutim, one of coal-rich regencies in East Kalimantan, has coal deposits of about 5.35 billion tons, found mostly in Sanggata, Bangalon, Sangkuliran, Longlees Busang. The actual production is estimated to reach about 100 million tons a year. Most of the coal are exported to Japan, Taiwan, the US and some European countries.(*)
