At least eight people were killed when a landslide occurred at an illegal gold mining operation at the Tumbang Titi district in Ketapang regency, West Kalimantan, last week, Kompas reported on Wednesday.

The daily said that eight illegal miners were found dead at the location but one of their colleagues was still missing in the incident, which took place on October 31. The local residents did not immediately report the incident to the local police because they feared the authority would close the mining area.

Six of the killed miners who hailed from Tasikmalaya, West Java were buried near the location, and the other two, the locals, were buried in their village nearby after a difficult evacuation. The other miner which was missing also hailed from Tasikmalaya. (*)
