Oil, gas services company PT Elnusa Tbk (IDX ELSA), a subsidiary of PT Pertamina Hulu Energi and part of Pertamina’s upstream sub-holding reported on Thursday that it has successfully completed Indonesia's first 3D and multi-2D seismic survey for the coal mining sector.

The survey was conducted in the mining concession area of PT Wahana Baratama Mining (WBM), a subsidiary of PT Bayan Group Tbk (IDX: BYAN), located in Tanah Laut, South Kalimantan.

The survey, which began in November 2024 and concluded in April 2025, covered an area of 25.85 square kilometers for the 3D section and 13.14 kilometers of track for the multi-2D section. The initiative was part of Elnusa’s efforts to support safer and more efficient underground mining planning by mapping the distribution of coal and identifying fault zones, the company claimed.

Elnusa utilized advanced vibroseis technology, including IVI EnviroVib 15 and Hemi 44 systems, alongside Smart SOLO IGU-16 1C nodal receivers with a frequency of 5 Hz. This technology enabled the company to provide high-quality, precise data, optimizing exploration processes for coal miners.

Mochamad Fariz, Senior Manager of Production & Project at Pertamina Upstream Subholding, stated that the technology used during the seismic survey was designed to achieve optimal vertical and horizontal resolution. This method offers a more comprehensive view of the subsurface compared to traditional techniques such as core drilling.
