PT Elnusa, a unit of Indonesia's state-owned oil and gas company PT Pertamina, has recently been awarded a contract to drill oil and natural gas wells in Iraq, Suara Karya daily reported on Tuesday.

Elnusa's president Rudy Rajab told reporters over the weekend that Iraq's Sabah Al-Shammery & Partners, or SAPCO, awarded the contracts to drill 60 new oil and gas wells in Basrah. Elnusa has valued the investment at up to US$90 million.

Rudy added the company will start the drilling in late February.

He also said Pertamina may award Elnusa a contract to conduct seismic activities in the Western Desert in Iraq. Former President Saddam Husein awarded the block to Pertamina in late 2002. (*)
