Indonesian firm PT Emas Hitam Jaya Rahayu will spend US$ 500 million in a couple of years to develop a common user coal terminal in East Regency, East Kalimantan with initial throughput capacity of 20 MTPA.

Operation Director Hanna Therik told Petromindo.Com recently that terminal which will be named Miang Besar Coal Terminal (MBCT) will start operations late 2012.

She said MBCT will be designed to accommodate ship loading for Capesize vessels of up to 275,000 DWT, equipped with barge unloading and stockpile facilities capable of storing up to 1 million tonnes of coal.

?Miang Besar is an excellent location for the terminal as there is 35 meters of water at the proposed berth which is 250 meters offshore,? she said.

The terminal will be equipped with 2-5 kms conveyor to transport coal from barge unloading point in Tanjung Pamerikan to Miang Besar Island with capacity of 8,000 tonnes per hour.

According to Hanna, MBCT will target mines that are located in East Kutai, including the mines that are owned by the company as its customers. The mines include PT Indonesia Coal Development, PT Perkasa Inakakerta, PT Tekno Orbit Persada, PT Indo Batubara and PT Mandiri Intiperkasa, which would have combined peak capacity production of more than 60 MTPA.

She said the MBCT?s capacity to service cape size vessels would make coal from East Kutai, which is generally of lower CV, more competitive in the international market especially India and Europe by significantly reducing shipping costs.

Shipping costs would further reduced by high loading capacity that would be capable to turn around a panamax vessel in 15 hours compared to 6 days using a floating transfer station, she said.

?Companies like PT Kaltim Prima Coal (KPC) can also used MBCT as coal blending place,? she said.

A number of foreign financial institutions will back the project, she said without disclosing names.

The Company is also developing its four coal concession in East Kutai with total area of 30,000 hectares with plan to bring the mine into production at the time MBCT starts production. According to Hanna, the mine has potential to produce 20MTPA. (alex)
