The progress of Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) works at the Semarang-Cirebon gas pipeline project has reached 46 percent, according to a top official of PT Pertamina Gas (Pertagas), the owner of the project.

?The EPC works of the Semarang-Cirebon pipeline project are ongoing and approximately 46 percent complete. The civil construction has begun around Tambak Lorok,? Pertagas?s President Director Hendra Jaya told Petromindo.com.

He added that the installation of pipeline will also soon start.

The 28-inch diameter pipeline will connect Semarang in Central Java and Cirebon in West Java. The pipeline will be connected to the Kepodang-Tambak Lorok gas pipeline which is being built by state owned gas distributor PT Perusahaan Gas Negara (PGN) to transmit gas from the Kepodang field offshore Central Java to PLTGU Tambak Lorok power plant in Semarang.

Downstream authority BPH Migas reported earlier that the Cirebon-Semarang pipeline project with a transmission capacity of 350 mmscfd was estimated in 2006 to cost about US$170 million. The project was initially awarded to state owned engineering firm PT Rekayasa Industri (Rekind) but the firm left the project undeveloped for many years, reportedly because of various reasons including financial problems. The government finally appointed Pertagas to do the project, calling on the firm to partner with Rekind.

Pertagas has started developing the project despite that it has yet to form a partnership with Rekind.

?The joint venture has to be established. Pertagas and Rekind are still in the phase of studying the cooperation,? Hendra emphasized.
