The shareholders of state tin mining company PT Tambang Timah has retained Erry Riyana Hardjapamekas as the president of the company following the company's shareholders meeting on Thursday (May 17), the company said in a notice to shareholders on Monday (May 21).

In the statement, the company said that the shareholders meeting approved the reappointment of other members of the board of directors, including Maryat Nirwandi, Thobrani Alwi, Ali Darwin and Ari Fauzi.

The statement said that the members of the board of directors, along with Erry Riyana, were given the mandate to steer the company until 2004.

The shareholders also appointed Shanti L. Poesposoetjipto as an independent commissioner to the company.

And the shareholders also affirmed their support for the members of the board of commissioners, including Muzani Syukur, Dr. Gunadi, Dr. Yoga Pratomo, MA Moelyadi, Waryono Karno. In addition, the board now has Shanti Poesposoetjipto as an independent commissioner.

The shareholders' decision to retain Erry Riyana dismissed earlier speculation that Erry Riyana would be kicked out of Timah.

Koran Tempo daily, for example, reported on Wednesday (May 16) that President Abdurrahman Wahid had ordered the replacement of Erry Riyana, whom the President considered to be one of former mines and energy minister Ginandjar Kartasasmita's close allies.

Ginandjar, also deputy speaker of the People's Consultative Assembly, the country's highest legislative body, is one of Abdurrahman's political foes.

The issue of Erry's replacement came when Minister of Finance Prijadi Praptosuhardjo and Director General of State Enterprises Development I Nyoman Tjager stated recently that the government was looking for best candidates for Timah directors.

But it turned out that Timah's shareholders retained Erry Riyana as Timah president. (*)
