At least 1,600 former employees of PT Caltex Pacific Indonesia (CPI) have threatened to sue local insurance company AJ Tugu Mandiri for refusing to pay their claims, Bisnis Indonesia reported on Saturday.
The representatives of the pensioners said Friday that the insurance company had until May 9 to settle their claims or face the legal suit.
The ex-Caltex employees unveiled their legal suit plan after none of the insurance company's representatives showed up in a meeting facilitated by the Indonesian Consumers Foundation on Friday.
Their refusal to attend the meeting, which was arranged with the help of the foundation to settle the dispute amicably, indicated that the insurance did not have any good faith to settle the case, said Hasan, the spokesman for the oil giant's pensioners.
The Caltex's ex-workers said that they joined the insurance scheme provided by AJ Tugu Mandiri during the period between 1992 and 1993.
But the insurance company had refused to meet the contract, which clearly stated that the ex-employees could enjoy the insurance benefits when their ages reached up to 80 years.
The pensioners said that the insurance company refused to meet the claims and it instead cut the insurance contracts without clear reasons. (*)
