Ex-workers and residents protest Inco's management

The daily said that the former workers and their families protested the company's decision last year to lay off them and urged the company to pay more compensation money.
The workers said that the layoff decision was unfair be cause it was made without the consent of the affected workers. They also claimed that the compensation money they received was far below the minimal amount set under the government's regulation.
Meanwhile over a hundred of local residents who joined the protest demanded the management of the company to pay the compensation for 358 hectares of land taken over the Canada-based nickel company in 2003.
The former workers and the residents began the protest early in the morning on Monday until late in the evening. The protesters blocked all the access roads to the company's mining site and office to pressure the management of the nickel mining operator to meet their demand.
Meanwhile about 50 activists from the FSMT non government organization also rallied in front of the office of the legislative council in in Makassar to support the demand made by the company's ex workers and the residents. (*)
