PT Exploitasi Energi Indonesia Tbk has planned to invest a total of US$ 400 million for development of several power plants at a total generation capacity of 200 megawatt (MW) next year.

?One of the power plants to be built is the steam power plant (PLTU) Pangkalan Bun with a generation capacity of 2x50 MW in Central Kalimantan. We?ll start its construction early next year and schedule it to be completed within 18 months,? PT Exploitasi Energi Indonesia President Director and CEO Henry Sitanggang was quoted by Investor Daily in Jakarta on Wednesday.

He pointed out that the company would also develop three mini-hydropower plants with a generation capacity of 2x3 MW each in West Java and West Sumatera. ?The total fund needed will be derived from internal cash at around 35 percent and bank loans at around 65 percent. We plan to develop the Pangkalan Bun power plant because the region is still in shortage of power supply,? he said on the sidelines of his visit to the PLTU Pangkalan Bun on Tuesday (13/11).

According to him, the power supply will be sold to the state utility PT PLN. ?This power plant will provide a gross margin of between 25 percent and 30 percent, while mini-hydro at around 90 percent,? he said.

Currently, he noted, the company is constructing the steam power plant (PLTU) Rengat and Tembilahan in Riau province with generation capacity of each at 2x7 MW. Both power plants are scheduled to start commercial operation next year.

The company has been now operating one unit of steam power plant in Pangkalan Bun with a generation capacity of 2x7 MW. It has started its operation since October 14th of 2011. ?It has contributed income to our company. But still most of our income is derived from coal trading,? he added.

He said that the development of power plants was part of its plan to integrate its coal business with power business in the next few years. ?In order to realize the plan, we?re also now seeking to acquire a number of power plants that have been in operation,? he said. (*)
