Area manager of oil and gas firm PT Exspan Nusantara Andi Lolo urged the local administration of Tarakan regency in East Kalimantan to coordinate with the company over plans to upgrade the local Pamusian shipping port.
Andi was quoted by the local Kaltim Post daily as saying that the upgrading activity could potentially create a blowout disaster because there were at least 15 oil wells in the area.
?If there?s a better coordination ? There?s possibility that the wells be temporarily closed down,? he told a meeting with local councilors.
The meeting was also participated by families of injured victims of recent blowout at one of Exspan oil wells.
The paper said that the local villagers were still worried of blowout accident to repeat in the future.
Exspan is a unit of the publicly-listed PT Medco Energy International.(*)
