Oil and gas producer PT Exspan Nusantara currently operates 43 oil wells in Tarakan, East Kalimantan, with a combined total capacity to turn out 2,023 barrels per day (bpd) of oil and 84.9 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD) of gas, local daily Kaltim Post reported on Thursday.
Of the 43 wells, 30 are old wells, Exspan?s president director Edi Bambang Setyo was quoted as saying on Wednesday.
One of the oil wells blew out and caught fire on Monday. But Exspan?s workers have succeeded to put off the fire at the well and stop gas spouting out from it. Six people were seriously injured in the accident.
Exspan is a unit of publicly listed oil and gas firm PT Medco Energi International.
The company?s crude oil and gas are respectively processed into fuel and liquefied natural gas (LNG) at refinery facilities near Balikpapan, East Kalimantan?s largest city. (*)
