Oil producer PT Exspan Nusantara will this year build an oil sludge treatment plant in Tarakan, East Kalimantan, local daily Kaltim Post reported Friday.
Oil sludge, suspected to originate from oil operations some 100 years ago, was feared to have contaminated the Pamedia River in Tarakan and area water wells.
The paper said that Exspan was examining the quality of the river water and water at wells in Tarakan.
The company had planned to build an oil sludge treatment facility near the Pamedia River this year, following an agreement between Exspan and the Tarakan city administration.
Exspan is a subsidiary of publicly listed oil firm PT Medco Energi International. (*)
