US super major ExxonMobil Corp. said it was implementing a work program to evaluate shale gas and coal bed methane in the Barito Basin in South Kalimantan totaling approximately 290,000 acres.

The company said in a presentation released last week that it planned to conduct pilot tests to evaluate the viability of Indonesian coal bed methane as a gas resource and expect to initiate exploration drilling in December of 2010, followed by pilot testing in the first half of 2011.

ExxonMobil has non-operating interest in three CBM blocks in South Kalimantan, namely Banjar 1, Banjar 2 and Barito Tapin blocks which are operated by local firm PT Sugico Graha.(alex)
