Dear Sir,
We want to clarify some issues raised in the article that April in your online edition on February 9, 2002 entitled "Expert Fail to End Deafening noise at ExxonMobil's plant".
ExxonMobil Oil Indonesia has been operating the Arun Field in North Aceh for close to 30 years. As part of this large industrial complex, we operate some machinery in Cluster II that can be heard in some nearby communities. However, we believe that the Cluster II equipment has been operating well within legal noise tolerances, and we are continually monitoring our equipment to develop ways to make it quieter in its operation.
It is unfortunate that any noise from the equipment at Cluster II is troublesome to our neighbors near Arun Field Work Cluster II.
We are currently in discussions on this important matter with our neighbors and officials of the local government in North Aceh, including the environmental agency, and hope to be able to work this situation out to everyone's satisfaction.
It will always be ExxonMobil's objective to conduct its business with concern for the safety of the people and the environment around our operations. It is core principle of our company to adhere to high ethical and operational standards whenever we operate.
Sincerely,
Deva Rachman, Media Relations Officer, ExxonMobil Oil Indonesia Inc. Tel: +62-21-57986299, Fax: +62-21-57986222
