US oil giant Exxon Mobil Corp. is ready to spud its first deepwater exploration well in Mandar and Surumana PSCs in Makassar Straits, a company official said on Wednesday.

ExxonMobil Oil Indonesia (EMOI) VP External Relations Maman Budiman told Petromindo.Com that the Rangkong-1 well in Surumana PSC will spud on Wednesday or Thursday.

?The rig is already in place and ready to start drilling,? he said.

He did not give detail about the well?s planned total depth.

EMOI will use deepwater semi-submersible drilling rig West Aquarius owned by Seadrill to conduct the drilling.

According to Maman, the rig will operate in the water depth of 2,000 meters, targeting hydrocarbon reservoir at the depth of 4,000 meters.

Maman said last year that EMOI will drill three wells in Surumana and another three in Mandar.

EMOI has 100 percent stake in both blocks. (godang)
