ExxonMobil to proceed with court settlement over dispute with ex-workers

PT ExxonMobil Oil Indonesia (EMOI) will proceed with a court settlement to resolve its dispute with former employees, despite efforts by North Aceh regency legislative council to seek an out of court settlement through a dialogue mechanism, the local Serambi Indonesia daily reported Thursday.
The paper quoted legislator Samsul Bahri as saying that EMOI has sent a letter to the council stating that it intended to proceed with the court settlement.
The Jakarta Court recently ruled EMOI to pay Rp 26 billion in additional compensation for some 224 ex-workers dismissed in 1996. EMOI had appealed to a higher court.
The legislators said that EMOI expected a speedy court process to resolve the dispute.(*)
