Abu Dhabi-based shipyard company Fabtech International plans to build two offshore jack-up rigs in Batam, with investment of up to about US$350 million, Investor Daily reported Thursday.

Syed Muhammad Taufik, a senior official of the investment office in Batam, said Wednesday that the company would need about 8,000 workers to support the construction of the two jack-up rigs, which would last up to three years.

He said that the company would start the construction works as soon as it received a permit and the location to carry out the project. According to him, the chairman of Fabtech International Harry Moraes would soon meet with the chairman of the Batam Authority Mustofa Wijaya to discuss the plan.

Syed said that the company would ask the Batam Authority to provide land area of about 134 hectares located between the industrial sites of Sembawang Marine Offshore Engineering (SOME) and PT Arpeni Shipyard. (*)
