Some 30 farmers in the Sangatta area of East Kalimantan held a fresh protest against coal mining firm PT Kaltim Prima Coal to demand a fair compensation for their land.

The local Suara Kaltim daily said that the farmers had fight for years for the demand but had no success.

"We'll not stop protesting until the company fulfill our demand," said Hadjaratas, one of the protesting farmers.

The Kutai administration had earlier proposed a Rp 180 million in compensation for the farmers' 475,000 ha land but the farmers turned down the offer.

The farmers then continued their protest including through disturbing the operation of KPC and its contractors.

But KPC retaliated by filing a lawsuit against the farming accused of obstructing the company's operation. (*)
