The government plans to allocate gas from Kasuri block in West Papua operated by Malaysian firm Genting Oil for a methanol-based olefin plant which German petrochemical firm Ferrostaal Industrial Projects GmbH plans to build in Bintuni Bay Regency of the province.

"The petrochemical plant is envisaged to receive gas from Genting, rather than Tangguh. The Genting?s gas will thus be allocated for petrochemical production," Director General of Oil and Gas at Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, IGN Wiratmaja Puja told Petromindo.com recently, referring to the Tangguh LNG plant also in Bintuni, which was initially thought by some as the source of gas for the petrochemical plant.

The volume of gas to be supplied to the petrochemical plant is however not final yet as discussion on the Plan of Development of the Kasuri block is ongoing, Wiratmaja said, while noting that the block can produce between 80-100 mmscfd

"As a matter of fact, the more Ferrostaal absorbs, the happier we are. However, the volume is still being discussed as the PoD of the block is not final yet," he said.

He underlined that the Kasuri block holds a reserve (P1) of about 1.8 tcf of gas.
