German petrochemical firm Ferrostaall Industrial Projects GmbH has made a request to the government of Indonesia for the supply of 202 mmscfd of gas for its planned methanol-based olefin plant in Bintuni Bay Regency, West Papua Province.

?Gas in Bintuni region comes from two companies, namely BP and Genting Oil,? Heri Purnomo, a senior official at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, told Petromindo.com Thursday.

He said that Ferrostaal has requested for gas supply from the Kasuri block in West Papua operated by Malaysia?s Genting Oil, as gas production from the Tangguh field located in the same province operated by BP has already been entirely allocated to buyers.

Heri, however said that Genting Oil has yet to submit to the government the plan of development (POD) for the Kasuri block. "So we?re waiting for Genting?s POD to be submitted and approved," he said.

Ferrostaal plans to invest US$ 1.89 billion in Bintuni Bay Regency to build a methanol plant with a production capacity of 1.3 million tons per year.

In early March 2013 in Berlin, during a state visit by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, Ferrostaal signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) with the Ministry of Industry on cooperation for the development of the petrochemical project in West Papua.
