A fire that engulfed BP Indonesia 's natural gas production platform at the offshore North West Java Sea Block is now under control, state-owned oil and gas company Pertamina said Thursday.

BP Indonesia, a unit of BP PLC , operates the field under a production sharing contract with Pertamina.

The fire started around 0130 GMT Thursday (9:30 p.m. EDT Wednesday), but there are no casualties, Pertamina spokesman Sidick Nitikusumah was quoted by Dow Jones Newswires as saying.

"We are still probing what caused the fire," he added, noting the platform will be shut for an indefinite period.

The production platform produces 40 million cubic feet of natural gas per day, and supplies to state-owned natural gas company PT Perusahaan Gas Negara and a power plant in north Jakarta operated by PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN).

For the time being, PLN will have to buy diesel from Pertamina as fuel for the power plant, Sidick said. (*)
