First coal-fired power plant in NTT begins operation

State-owned electricity firm PT. Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) on Thursday officially inaugurated the operation of the first coal-fired power plant in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) province. The 2x16.5 MW plant is located in Bolok Village, West Kupang sub-district, Kupang Regency.

Director for Eastern Indonesia Operation at PLN, Vickner Sinaga said quoted by tempo.co that that NTT has become the fifth province in Eastern Indonesia to have a coal-fired power plant facility. He said that the new power plant will help meet growing electricity demand in the province particularly in Timor.

The power plant, however, has yet to be able to run at full capacity as one generator (16.5 MW) has yet to be connected with the 70 kilovolt transmission network as construction of tower 51 has not been completed.

Another 2x7 MW coal-fired power plant is expected to be in operation soon located in Ropa Village, Ende Regency, NTT province. (*)
