Fishermen get Rp 18 billion in compensation

As many as 21,263 traditional fishermen in Cilacap, Central Java have received about Rp 18 billion (1US$ = Rp 8,500) in compensation payment from a leaked oil tanker which has recently caused a massive pollution in the local sea, Kompas reported on Thursday.

The compensation money was paid by Petroleum and Insurance company through representatives of fishermen in the regency. But the daily, did not say the amount of the compensation paid to each fisherman.

The oil tanker King Fisher, carrying 600,000 barrels of crude oil crashed into a large rock in the Cilacap sea in April. The major leakage due to the crash had resulted a massive oil spill, covering an area of over 35 kilometers.

The tanker was chartered by state oil and gas company Pertamina to fee its oil refinery in Cilacap. (*)
