At least five coal miners in East Kalimantan have been found of seriously damaging the environment but the local environment office has ruled out the possibility of imposing a sanction against the five mining companies, Kaltim Pos reported on Monday.

The environment office of the Kutai kartanegara regency said over the weekend that the office had found five coal mines including PT Multi Harapan Utama, PT Fajar Bumi Sakti, PT Tanito Harun, PT Bukit Baiduri Enterprises and PT Kitadin of damaging the environment.

According to the office?s findings, the mining locations where the five companies operate have been seriously damaged due to their inability to provide an appropriate mining technology in their coal production and transportation activities.

However, the local environment office had no plan to impose sanction against the companies. "The companies will be summoned but for the time being, they will be given more time to properly manage their environment," the office?s staff said. (*)
