The state-owned electricity company PT PLN said that it would use liquid coal produced from upgraded low rank coal for five of its five power plants (PP) namely Belawan PP, Tanjung Priok PP, Tanjung Perak PP, Tambak Lorok PP and Tello PP.

?We would make pilot project on the use of slurry at the five power plants,? PLN's head of Coal Division Hilmi Najamudin told Petromindo.com.

Japan Gas Corporation (JGC) developed demonstration plant to produce liquid coal in Karawang, West Java with the capacity of 10,000 tons per year.

JGC is expecting to realize commercial scale technology with an estimated investment of US$300 million that potentially could substitute the use of petroleum with liquid coal to generate power, with capacity of 1 million tons per year
