Four residents claiming themselves as the representatives of villagers in the Nuha district located in Luwu Timur regency, South Sulawesi, have been on a hunger strike for at least four days at nickel mining company PT Inco's office in Makassar to protest the company's lack of response to the villagers' demand, Kompas reported on Monday.

The four protesters, Yulian, Salimin, Werima and La Kisa managed to enter Inco's office and conducted a hunger strike after the company refused to pay compensation for their land.

They said that Inco had illegally taken part of their land into the company's mining concession in Soroako. A number of villagers in Dongi and Petea villages have demanded a fair compensation for their land used by Inco, a subsidiary of a Canadian mining company. (*)
