The giant gold mining company PT Freeport Indonesia has been asked by the government to immediately submit a geo technique design for its Wanagon Lake waste-dumping site.
Director general of mining Surna T. Djajadiningrat said on Friday that the geo technique design must be submitted to his office today (Saturday), and he would discuss it with Minister of Mines and Energy Susilo B. Yudhoyono on Sunday, before discussing it at the Wednesday cabinet meeting.
He said that the geo technique design would help avoid landslide incident to reoccur in the future.
Freeport was hit by the recent fatal landslide incident at the Wanagon Lake over burden dumping site.
The government has ordered Freeport to cut down production to 200,000 tons per day from 300,000 tons per day due to the landslide incident. The government has also banned the company from dumping its waste into the Wanagon Lake. (*)
