The giant gold and copper mining in West Papua PT Freeport Indonesia has not been honest in reporting its gold and copper production level, according to head of the local planning and development agency or Bappeda Inaury.

Speaking in a seminar on regional autonomy, Inaury was quoted by the Kompas daily as saying that Freeport had also claimed that out of every ton of raw mining materials, the company could only obtained around one gram of gold.

Inaury said that this was impossible because a traditional miner could obtain 2-3 gram of gold out of every kilogram of raw mining material.

He said that Freeport had also been very secretive about the profit obtained from its local mining operation.

Inaury also criticized Freeport for its lack of role in helping to promote autonomy in the West Papu province. (*)
