Freeport is "safe" for the time being

Attorney General Marzuki Darusman said that his office would be ready to discuss with the House of Representatives on the latter's demand for the government to revise its mining contract with the giant gold mining firm PT Freeport Indonesia.

But Marzuki said that for the time being Freeport was "safe" from having to be investigated by his office until there's a demand from the public and a new evidence to reopen an alleged past corruption case.

U.S. economist Jeffrey Winters accused Freeport had been involved in corruption and nepotism practices with the previous government of Soeharto in its giant gold operation in Irian Jaya province.

But the previous attorney general closed the case in 1998.(*)
