Freeport-McMoran pays special dividend

Freeport-McMoran Copper and Gold Inc., owner of the world?s biggest gold mine, declared a special dividend of 50 U.S. cents a share, the fifth such payout in as many quarters, The Jakarta Post newspaper reported citing Bloomberg on Thursday.

The special dividend is payable on March 31 to shareholders of record March 15 and is in addition to the regular quarterly payout of 31.25 U.S. cents a share, New Orleans-based Freeport said Tuesday in a statement distributed by Business Wire. Since the fourth quarter of 2004. the company has paid $2.25 a share in total extra dividends.

Freeport?s Grasberg mine in Indonesia is the world?s largest gold mine and second-biggest copper mine. Australia?s BHP Billiton Ltd. owns the largest copper mine, Escondida, Chile. (*)
