Copper and gold miner PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) said Friday its mining activities in Papua were continuing as usual despite Wednesday?s communal fighting near its mining sites.

?Our production activities are continuing normally. Security has not increased at our project sites,? PTFI?s senior manager corporate communications Siddharta Moersjid told Petromindo.Com.

PTFI operates a huge copper and gold mine in Timika, Papua.

On Wednesday, some 600 people from two villages near Tembagapura, Timika, were involved in a fighting, using spears and arrows to attack each other.

Seventeen people, including a police officer who was trying to stop the fighting, were seriously wounded. Four cars were damaged.

PTFI is the unit of New Orleans-based mining giant Freeport-McMoran Copper & Gold Inc. (godang)
